Anthem
Guidebook for London
In 2012 the Olympic Games will be held in Europe -
in London. Baron de Coubertin the founder of the
modern Games was quite clear that elite sport was
only half of the equation; it was also vital to
remember the role that sport and activity can play
in childrens healthy, positive development.
His stated aims for the Olympic movement have much
more to do with education than sport:
-
the balanced
development of the body, will and mind
-
the joy
found in effort
-
the
educational value of being a good role model
-
respect for
universal ethics including tolerance,
generosity, unity, friendship,
non-discrimination and respect for others.
We wish to develop a project based around these
Olympic ideals. All schools serve varying
communities and are responsible for educating
children who will live, work and be active in
countries which are becoming more diverse in terms
of culture, faith, ethnicity and social backgrounds.
Through their ethos and curriculum and the unifying
ideals of the Olympic Games, schools can promote a
common sense of identity and support diversity,
showing pupils that different communities can work
together to develop a coherent, successful and
healthy future for Europe.
A partnership 'Olympic Festival' planned and
organised by the pupils to be held in 2012 - using
information and communications technology to link
the event live across participating schools.
The Festival would extend beyond sport to include
children's games, music, cookery, poetry and
writing, art and design.
www.dontjustsitthere.org.uk FOC meets online
every two weeks throughout the project.
As the schools prepare for the 'Olympic Festival'
they exchange information, building collective
knowledge about the participants through the
Partnership interactive Website.
Publications to include:
-
A guide to
preparing for the 'Olympic Festival' - e.g. food
and diet, training, tips to improve performance
-
A guidebook
of useful words and phrases for visitors to the
'Olympic Village'
-
A tourist
guidebook for each country
-
Book of
local traditions, festivals and celebrations
-
A CD/DVD of
traditional music, songs and dances from each
country
-
A compendium
of playground and street games
Design and Technology Projects to include:
-
Virtual/Model Olympic Festival Village
-
Flags and
banners for the 'Opening Ceremony'
-
Clothes
design for the participants - tracksuits,
uniforms
-
Olympic
souvenirs and memorabilia
The pupils will be challenged to engage their local
business communities in securing sponsorship and
support for the books/materials they produce and
sell.
All profits from the publication and sale of books
and resources will go to community based charities
nominated by the pupils - these charities to support
the removal of barriers to any child's participation
in sports and activities.
